August Sun

Picking apples on the borderline
Singing songs of Caroline
In the August sun
The day is done
Wrought iron elevators
Earrings shaped like alligators
We’ll get along
In the august sun
Laying in the swaying trees
The daisies make me sneeze
I don’t mind
If it gets dark
I’ll meet you in the park
I don’t care
I’ll meet you there
And I like the waiting
The anticipating
hearing you knocking at my door
And I like talking
About the weather
About whatever
You wanna do
Skipping stones
Breaking bones
The drunken feeling of the August sun
Museum tours
Marble floors
Coffee after dinner when the day is done

Here comes Julie
with her straight and curly hair
I felt the wind cut through me
When I saw her standing there
I’m lost in Penn Station
She’s drunk on the jitney
Doing 85
On an endless expressway
Wrap yourself in flowing white
And meet me on the beach
God I hate this party
There’s no place I’d rather be
And Im thinking about the seasons,
How they’re changing all the time
I hear she’s got a big house
and I’m sleeping there tonight
Linens in the laundry
Raincoats by the door
Summertime gets lonely
When you’re pushing 24
There’s light out on the sound
Or is that the bay?
I don’t really know Long Island
It’s water, either way
So undo my top button
Or maybe two or three
It’s hard think about dying
When you’re living fancily
But I’m thinking about the reasons
For standing single file
Holding out my ticket
Instead of jumping the turnstile
Julie’s got a big house
On a beachside grassy hill
She finds it easy to be polite
When daddy pays the bills
Drink up, baby
Let’s inhale the swirling brine
She thinks I look so pretty
When my lips are stained with wine
So unlock the bedroom
There’s nothing going on
Scotty won’t be coming home
To his clothes out on the lawn
But I’m thinking about the treason
I’ve committed in my mind
I know that she’ll be laughing
When I’m hanging for my crimes
Now the weekend’s over
I’m reclining on the train
Ordering club soda
Pretending it’s champagne
Thinking about leaving
This whiplash way of life
Maybe I’ll start over
I know Julie will be fine
